Taxable income is your total assessable income, salary and wages, bank interest, dividends, rental income, business income and capital gains, minus your allowable deductions. It does not include your employer's compulsory super contributions.
Your marginal rate is the rate applied to your next dollar earned, the bracket you are currently in. Your average rate is your total tax divided by your total income, and it is always lower. Australia uses a progressive system, so a pay rise never reduces your take-home pay.
If you are lodging a tax return now, choose 2025–26, the year that ended on 30 June 2026. If you are checking your current pay, choose 2026–27. The rates differ: the rate on income between $18,201 and $45,000 dropped from 16% to 15% on 1 July 2026.
Yes. The low income tax offset (LITO) is applied automatically for Australian residents. It is worth up to $700 if you earn $37,500 or less, then reduces in two stages and cuts out entirely at $66,667. LITO reduces tax payable but is not refundable, so it cannot create a refund on its own.
Estimate only. This Income Tax Calculator uses the rates published by the Australian Taxation
Office and covers the most common situation: salary or wage income for a full financial year. It does
not include the Medicare levy surcharge, private health rebate, SAPTO, foreign income, or capital
gains. It is general information, not tax advice, for advice on your circumstances, speak to a
registered tax agent.
